Journal, 1780-1784.

Journal of Edenton, N.C., merchant Joseph Westmore, who prospered during the Revolution by privateering and by investing in shipping along the Atlantic Coast and with the West Indies, the Canary islands, and France, and after the war with England and Scotland. During the war Westmore sold goods to the North Carolina government for the use of the state troops. His journal records mercantile accounts and also accounts of various ships, including cargoes, maintenance and repairs, names and wages of captains and crew, etc. Merchantile accounts illustrate trade with Suffolk, Portsmouth, Petersburg, and Williamsburg, Va., as well as Philadelphia, Pa., New York, N.Y., Haiti, and Jamaica. The journal was later used in 1864-1865 by the mistress of a plantation in King and Queen County, Va., to record cotton and wool cloth production as well as the distribution of supplies to slaves.
